When Worldschooling is Awesome

Imagine you’re a worldschooler, and today’s lesson is surfing instead of a regular gym class. If you like, you can think of it as studying wave equations in physics 😁. It’s not like we’re un-schoolers… Our kids were thrilled because the internet in Sri Lanka was practically nonexistent, so we took three weeks off to explore and enjoy our surroundings.

It turns out that our kids are complete naturals at surfing. Tre (our oldest) and I did surfing lessons the day before to see if it was something the littles could handle. It definitely was, and our surf instructor was up for the challenge of instructing four of us at once.

I told him, I could corral the kids and ensure they could get past the waves and over to him for instruction after each pass. It worked like a charm! Unlike me, who stood up successfully a generous 40% of the time, all three of our little aquamen stood up on their first try and nearly rode the wave to the shore!

In fact, Jenn took to standing by the rocks to remind kids to bail before they dashed into them on the west side of the beach. They were definitely “smug” as they like to say at how well they were doing and agreed it was pretty much the most fun thing they had ever done!

In fact, they were so much better than me at surfing that at one point, Jeadon accidentally caught a wave! She was waiting for the instructor to help her brother when a wave started pushing her. She thought it was the instructors cue to get going so she just hopped up and caught a wave alongside her brother. Us mortals tend to ride the wave until we wipe out at the end but my oldest does a front flip to dismount which sends the instructor into an uncontrol bout of whoops and cheers. So fun to see!

We told the instructor as we left, that if he’s around in 10 years, he’d better be ready to expand his hut because there are three little instructors that will be heading his way! Jenn and I were super excited for them. We had many opportunities to try surfing lessons in other countries, but it wasn’t quite right. Surf was too rough, or the pricing was too touristy! This, was our goldilocks moment 😃.
